‘A DOG’S PURPOSE’
Rating: PG for thematic elements and some peril.
What it’s about: A story about the many lives of one remarkable dog.
The kid-attractor factor: This family-friendly, animal-loving film will attract families and kids.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Dog philosopher says: Be here now.
Violence: A sequence of a criminal chase, dramatic water rescue and shooting. Not gory but there is blood. The dog is continually dying and coming back to life.
Language: None
Sexuality: Kisses between high school boyfriend and girlfriend.
Drugs: None
Parents advisory: Appropriate for kids of all ages.
‘GOLD’
Rating: R for language throughout and some sexuality/nudity.
What it’s about: Inspired by a true story, a Nevada mining prospector hits the mother lode with a gold mine in Indonesia, and ends up on a stock market roller coaster.
The kid-attractor factor: Teens might be intrigued by star Matthew McConaughey.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Always sell some stock and save it for a rainy day. Mining and playing the stock market are games of chance, and it’s all too easy to roll your luck away.
Violence: A punch in the face, a shot of a dead body, intimidation with guns, etc.
Language: Sustained swearing and strong language throughout.
Sexuality: A couple of sex scenes, though not graphic, a shot of McConaughey’s backside.
Drugs: Constant binge drinking and smoking.
Parents advisory: Fine for most teens, definitely not appropriate for kids, with regard to the sexuality and drinking/drugs/immorality.
