Alta passed away at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and as a teenager, moved with her family to La Grande, Oregon. She attended Eastern Oregon University, where she received her bachelor’s degree and met her husband of 56 years, Jerry Deats. They settled in Bend, Oregon, where she was an elementary school teacher until she retired in 1991. Alta was an avid skier and hiker, who loved to travel. In retirement, Alta and Jerry spent time between their homes in Oregon and Mexico. They traveled extensively, often with their grandchildren.
Alta is survived by her brother, Robert Hill; sister, Doris Tyler; children, Michael Deats of Los Angeles; Lisa Bushong of Bend; five grandchildren, Nick McCann and wife, Jennifer; Dr. Amaris Hanson and husband, Steve Hanson; Hunter Bushong; Annalise Moore; and Ciera Ballard. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Floyd and Margret Hill; and her husband, Jerry Deats.
A service is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Charles Hospice, 2500 N.E. Neff Rd., Bend, Oregon 97701.
