Former Beaver Brandin Cooks traded to Patriots

The Patriots acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks in a trade with the New Orleans Saints on Friday. New England reportedly will send its first-round pick, the 32nd overall, in this year’s draft, plus a third-rounder, to New Orleans for the former Oregon State star and a fourth-round pick.
In Cooks, New England has a remedy for one of its few offensive weaknesses: a lack of speed. The 5-foot-10, 189-pound receiver was the Saints’ first-round pick in 2014 after he posted the fastest 40-yard dash time (4.33) in that year’s draft combine. Last year, Cooks caught 78 passes for 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns, including a 98-yard score.
The Saints deemed Cooks expendable after the quick emergence of Michael Thomas, their second-round pick last year who caught 92 passes for 1,137 and nine touchdowns as a rookie. New Orleans also acquired wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. in free agency, giving them a deep threat to replace Cooks. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that the Saints had some urgency to move Cooks: He is owed a $781,599 roster bonus Monday.
