Trail Update

Published 5:36 am Thursday, March 23, 2017

Springlike to wet snow-packed conditions exist on winter trails, depending on the temperature and precipitation. If it rains in the next week, trails will be soft, wet and sloppy.

Trail grooming currently is intermittent due to the softer conditions, especially on the snowmobile trails. As far as snow depth, most trails have adequate amounts of snow, but it is receding with the warmer temperatures. Wanoga Snow Play Area could have firm and icy conditions during morning hours that turn slushy and soft in the afternoon.

Be warned, spring avalanche potential does exist in the backcountry. Tumalo Bowl recently had crevices break off and slide down, which could be an indication of more avalanches to come in the backcountry.

If we have rainy periods, motorized and nonmotorized users should be aware that the potential for water slush hazards may exist. Watch for dark areas in the snowpack with a blue or brown tinge and test the areas before crossing them.

Fair to good summer trail access is very limited to nonexistent at this time. Please do not use soft to muddy trails due to the potential for increased erosion and damage. As far as wilderness access, a late season start is expected. For drier trails, hikers and bikers can try the East Fort Rock Trail system, Horse Butte Trail, Smith Rock State Park or the Oregon Badlands Wilderness Area.

If you’re interested in volunteering with the national forest, registration for spring training is now open. For more information, visit highcascadesvolunteers.com.
