Camille Weaver is in position to win her third straight heptathlon title after a strong first day of the Summit Decathlon/Heptathlon at Summit High on Friday.

With wins in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump, the Summit senior racked up 2,666 points to grab a 458-point lead over second-place Darian Wilson from Coquille. The meet concludes on Saturday.

Because the special multi-event meet is not considered part of the OSAA regular season, athletes are competing unattached from their respective high schools.

Weaver also placed second in the 200 meters and was third in the shot put on Friday. Summit’s Madison Hagfors is fourth in the heptathlon standings with 2,064 points after tying for second place in the high jump, placing fourth in the 200 and taking fifth in both the 100 hurdles and the shot put. The Storm’s Megan Cornett, who was second in the shot put and tied for seventh in the high jump, is eighth in the 17-athlete heptathlon field with 1,591 points and four events remaining.

In the decathlon, Redmond’s Chance Greene and Summit’s Noah Turnbull are seventh and eighth, respectively, after the first five events. Greene, with 2,329 points, was fourth in the long jump and seventh in the shot put, while Turnbull, who is just eight points behind, won the shot with a throw of 14.18 meters and tied for third in the high jump. Jackson Stallard, from Powers, leads the 24-athlete field with 3,122 points. Summit’s Ryan Tennant won the 100-meter dash and the high jump and was second in the long jump, but he was scratched from the day’s final event, the 400, and is not expected to compete Saturday.
