David Rex Hamaker, 71, died in Palm Springs on Friday, April 7, 2017. David was severely injured in a wind storm the week prior. He eventually died from complications of his injuries. His death was sudden and unexpected.
David was born July 31, 1945, to his parents, Rex and Lucille Hamaker, in Eugene, Oregon. He is the youngest of 3 children and is survived by his significant other Meridith Brown; sister, Karen Cochran; brother, Steve Hamaker (Cherry); and 4 children, Katie Hamaker (Soo), Molly Hamaker-Teals (Chuck), Kristen Gyben (Pete), Ginny Gerard (Bill); seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
At the age of 18, he won the Oregon State Golf Championship and remained an avid golfer for the rest of his life. David was a successful business man. He spent nearly 30 years as President of Western Graphics Corp. in Eugene, Oregon. After retiring, he directed his time and energy into supporting the Relief Nursery in Eugene, Oregon, Habitat for Humanity in Sisters, Oregon, the Lucy Curci Center at Eisenhower Hospital in Rancho Mirage, as a mentor at SCORE and at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Palm Desert. He played a significant role in the Al-Anon community in both Palm Desert, CA, and Sisters, OR.
One of David’s more rewarding and long term volunteer activities was as a big brother through the Big Brother Big Sister program in Eugene, Oregon. Throughout David’s life, he mentored 2 wonderful boys as they graduated into adulthood.
There will be a celebration of life in both Palm Desert, CA, and in Black Butte Ranch, OR. The services in Palm Desert will be at Rancho Las Palmas Golf Club on April 22nd from 4-6pm. The services in Black Butte, OR, will be on July 24th from 1-3pm at the Black Butte Lodge.
