“THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS”
Rating: PG-13 for prolonged sequences of violence and destruction, suggestive content, and language.
What it’s about: The eighth installment of the exhaust-fueled fast cars and international crimes franchise — Dom and the gang are back for one last job involving hackers, nuclear missiles and family intrigue.
The kid attractor factor: The action-adventure genre, gas-powered action and roster of stars will be a big draw for teens.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Always put family first, have faith in your loved ones, and think outside the box.
Violence: Lots of shooting, brawling, hand-to-hand fighting, car chases, crashes, pile ups and explosions. No graphic gore or blood.
Language: Some swearing throughout.
Sexuality: A sensual sex scene (no nudity), some skimpy outfits on babes at the street race, some suggestive comments.
Drugs: None
Parents advisory: Fine for teens but the action and violence are too intense for small kids.
“THE LOST CITY OF Z”
Rating: PG-13 for violence, disturbing images, brief strong language and some nudity.
What it’s about: The true story of Percy Fawcett, an Englishman who adventured through the Amazon in the early 20th century
The kid attractor factor: Stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland as well as the historical adventure theme could be a draw for teen audiences.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Never give up on your dreams, no matter the cost.
Violence: A fox hunt, a violent World War I battle in the trenches of France, violent encounters with native tribes in Brazil, an image of a charred human body for consumption, as well as other instances of illness and peril in the jungle.
Language: Only briefly
Sexuality: Some nudity of the tribespeople but nothing sexual or graphic.
Drugs: Some drinking
Parents advisory: Fine for teens and older kids.
This guide, compiled by film critic Katie Walsh, is published here every Friday. It should be used with the MPAA rating system for selecting movies suitable for children. Films rated G, PG or PG-13 are included, along with R-rated films that may have entertainment or educational value for older children with parental guidance.
