Madbum: Ride not the best decision

SAN FRANCISCO — Giants ace Madison Bumgarner, speaking publicly for the first time since the dirt bike accident that injured his pitching shoulder, said Monday he deeply regrets the decision to risk injury in an off-day endeavor but vowed to get back to the mound as quickly possible.

“It’s terrible,” Bumgarner said. “Obviously, it was not my intentions when we set out to enjoy the off day. I realize that’s definitely not the most responsible decision I’ve made. It sucks not being able to be out here with my guys.”

Bumgarner, who met the media with his left arm in a sling, did not want to speak prematurely about how long he might be sidelined, whether he will need surgery or whether he will be able to pitch again this season.

“It’s hard to put a timetable on it, but I would certainly be disappointed if I wasn’t,” he said.

Bumgarner said he spent the off day Thursday riding dirt bikes in the mountains outside of Denver with two family members. He said they were near the end of two to three hours of riding when the accident occurred. The pitcher was a bit unclear on what exactly happened.

“Man, I knew I was going to get asked that question and I wish I had some sort of cool story for you, some kind of crazy wreck, but it really wasn’t anything spectacular,” the 27-year-old said. “It was just super unfortunate.”

While his contract lists prohibited activities, Bumgarner did not offer specifics but said he has been told he faces discipline.

“Yeah, I think there’s quite a bit of stuff in there (the contract), but that’s probably not the first time I’ve made a stupid decision. We are human,” Bumgarner said.
