Richard “Racehorse” Haynes, 90: Flamboyant Texas lawyer with a spellbinding courtroom style who won acquittals in several high-profile murder cases and was acclaimed as one of the country’s foremost defense attorneys. Died Friday at home in Trinity, Texas.

Thomas Forkner, 98: Founder of Waffle House, the family restaurant chain known for its friendly staff and perpetual business hours. Died Wednesday in Suwanee, Georgia.

Norman Hatch, 96: Former Marine cinematographer whose Academy Award-winning footage of a punishing U.S. victory in the Pacific during World War II was so grisly that it had required White House approval before it could be released. Died April 22 in Alexandria, Virginia.
