NEW YORK — New York Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury also was out of Tuesday’s lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays with an injury to his left elbow. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said an MRI revealed a bruised nerve, and the team will wait a couple of days before making a decision about whether Ellsbury needs to go on the disabled list.

Ellsbury got hurt when he ran face-first into the padded wall to make a terrific catch Monday.

“Pretty much my whole left side made contact with the wall,” Ellsbury told media after the game. “I knew once I jumped for it, I’d be hitting the wall. Just trying to make a play.”

The 33-year-old former Madras High and Oregon State star is batting .282 in 24 games with three home runs — including his first career grand slam Saturday against Baltimore — and nine RBIs. His seven stolen bases are tied for second in the American League.

If Ellsbury is unable to go by Friday, when the Yankees open a series against the Cubs in Chicago, the team would have to put him on the DL.
