Tom Hanks, Patton Oswalt and Emma Watson star in “The Circle.” (Francois Duhamel/STX Entertainment)

“THE CIRCLE”

Rating: PG-13 for a sexual situation, brief strong language and some thematic elements including drug use.

What it’s about: A young worker at a tech company discovers the dark side of all-consuming transparency.

The kid attractor factor: Star Emma Watson will draw teen audiences, but this is an adult drama/thriller.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Utopian ideals may hide nefarious underpinnings. Sharing everything can have consequences. The internet mob may be used for evil.

Violence: A deadly car crash

Language: One instance of swearing/strong language

Sexuality: A glimpsed sexual act on a surveillance camera

Drugs: Drinking

Parents advisory: Fine for young teens and older kids, if they’re interested, but the genre and issues at hand will appeal more to older audiences.

This guide, compiled by Tribune News Service film critics, is published here every Saturday. It can be used with the MPAA rating system for selecting movies suitable for children. Films rated G, PG or PG-13 are included, along with R-rated films that may have entertainment or educational value for older children with parental guidance.
