Bend’s Mitch Modin wins Pac-12 decathlon title

CORVALLIS — Bend’s Mitch Modin finished first in three events Sunday to claim his first Pac-12 championship in the decathlon.
The Oregon senior dominated the second day of competition, winning the discus, tying for first place in the pole vault, and winning the javelin.

Modin had such a big lead going into the final event, the 1,500 meters, that he coasted in the race and finished seventh in 5 minutes, 0.37 seconds, but still won the decathlon by 98 points over his Ducks teammate Joe Delgado, who ran a blistering 4:14.75 to move into second place.
Modin, a graduate of Bend’s Mountain View High School, finished with a total of 7,530 points, and Delgado was second with 7,432.
Tyler Bendel of California took third (7,413), and Isaiah Oliver of Colorado, who led the decathlon after the first day, finished fourth (7,394).
Modin, who placed seventh in the decathlon at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, started Sunday by placing third in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.64 seconds. He then won the discus with a throw of 124 feet, 7½ inches.
Next, Modin tied for first in the pole vault with Andrew Ghizzone of Colorado with a vault of 15-5. He went on to win the javelin with a throw of 197-0, then cruised in the 1,500 en route to the Pac-12 decathlon title.
Modin and Delgado gave the Ducks a total of 18 points toward their team score.

The remainder of the Pac-12 outdoor track and field championships will be staged Saturday and Sunday at Eugene’s Hayward Field.
