EUGENE — Culver’s Catylynn Duff broke the Class 2A state record in the discus throw with her second attempt at the state track and field championships Thursday at Hayward Field. Then she added more than 6 feet on her final throw to win.

Duff’s career best of 138 feet, 7 inches on her final attempt shattered the record of 126-1 heading into the event. Her second throw — 132-4 — had previously broken the old mark, but Elgin’s Talia Whitmore threw 134-11 on her final attempt to take second place.

Duff’s previous career best was the 128-8 she threw at the district meet for the Bulldogs. The junior led Culver to a team score of 13 points and fourth place heading into Friday’s events. Defending champion Grant Union has a commanding lead with 41 points.

In the 3A girls, La Pine’s Jordynn Slater repeated as state champion in the javelin with a throw of 141-11. She was second in the discus for the Hawks, who head into the final day in fourth place with 18 points. Coquille leads the team standings with 31 points.

In the 1A girls, Gilchrist’s Skyla Newton was the top qualifier in the 300-meter hurdles in Thursday’s preliminaries. The Grizzlies sophomore ran 48.39 in the first heat, nearly two seconds faster than Sahalie Crain of Chiloquin. Newton also qualified for the 100 and 100-hurdles finals. Joseph leads with 20 points, and North Lake is close behind with 15.

In 3A boys, La Pine’s Scout Labhart won the long jump with a leap of 22-7¼, and Josiah Jenkins tied for fifth in the pole vault as the Hawks finished the first day in third place with 13.5 points. Harrisburg leads the team standings with 19 points.
