Tiger Woods was charged with driving under the influence early Monday, though he said alcohol was not a factor.

Woods was taken into custody at 3 a.m. in Jupiter, Florida. He was booked at 7:18 a.m. and released at 10:50 a.m., according to Palm Beach County Jail records.

“What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications,” Woods said in a statement. “I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”

Woods, 41, who lives and owns a restaurant in Jupiter, has won 14 major golf championships and has more than $100 million in career earnings from golf competitions alone. But he has been troubled by injuries in recent years.

After 16 months off because of back problems, he returned in December. He failed to make the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in January. He withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic in February because of a back spasms after shooting an opening-round 77 and has not played since.

In April, he had a fourth back operation, which was expected to keep him off the course for six months. Last week, he wrote on his website that he intended to play professionally again and that he “could no longer live with the pain” he had before the surgery.
