MCKENZIE PASS — Still bitter after being left off the U.S. Olympic team, Carmen Small took out some of her frustration on the road up McKenzie Pass to win a field sprint and claim today’s stage 1 of the pro women’s Cascade Cycling Classic.
The Cylance Pro Cycling rider pulled away from second-place Tara Whitten of the Cyclery Opus with just 50 meters to go atop the pass in the 89-mile race that started at Smith Rock State Park.
Alison Jackson of Twenty16 finished third.
In the pro men’s race, Robin Carpenter of Holowesko-Citadel sprinted away from a group of about 40 riders at the finish line to take the stage win in the 112-mile McKenzie Pass Road Race.
Taylor Shelden of Jelly Belly finished second. Carpenter’s teammate Travis McCabe took third.
