Rhiannon Giddens has spent more than a decade exploring the roots of African American music in the U.S. while simultaneously forging new paths. Starting out with old-time string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, which won a Grammy in 2010, Giddens has emerged as a powerful solo artist in recent years with lauded appearances at T Bone Burnett’s “Another Day, Another Time” concert in New York City in 2013 and as part of the Glasgow, Scotland-based Transatlantic Sessions in 2016. Last year, she became the first woman and first African-American to win the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. Her second studio album, “Freedom Highway” — released in February and featuring a typically genre-busting mix that combines the Chocolate Drops’ Carolina Piedmont blues roots with elements of funk, soul, rock and hip-hop — was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Americana Music Honors and Awards (the awards show is in September). Giddens plays the Tower Theatre on Monday.
