Author! Author! speakers announced

The Deschutes Public Library Foundation has announced the four authors headlining the 2017-18 Author! Author! literary series in Bend.

The lineup includes Pulitzer Prize winners Michael Chabon, Elizabeth Strout and Colson Whitehead, along with best-selling science writer and humorist Mary Roach.

Chabon, whose nine novels include “Wonder Boys” and the 2001 Pulitzer-winning “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” will speak first on Oct. 25. He has also published two short story collections and two collections of essays.

Roach, who will speak on Jan. 27, has written for several magazines including National Geographic and Wired, and has also published seven books including “Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void” and her most recent book, “Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War.”

Whitehead is scheduled to appear on Feb. 16. His acclaimed “The Underground Railroad” won both the 2017 Pulitzer for fiction and the 2016 National Book Award. He has also written five other novels and two works of nonfiction.

Elizabeth Strout will be the final speaker in the series on March 16. She won the 2009 Pulitzer for “Olive Kitteridge” and her award-winning debut novel “Amy and Isabelle” was adapted into a feature film. She has authored four other novels and her short stories have appeared in The New Yorker and other publications.

Each event is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bend High School auditorium (230 NE Sixth St.). Series tickets with admission to all four events cost $80 and will go on sale Aug. 18. Tickets for individual events are priced at $25 each and will be available starting Sept. 1.

Proceeds from the Author! Author! series benefit Deschutes Public Library programs and services.
