TRACK & FIELD
Bowie falls to 100 victory — Tori Bowie leaned over the line for her 100-meter victory, then stumbled and crashed down to the track to put the exclamation point on the second straight sprint shock of the world championships in London. Her .01-second victory Sunday over Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast was a photo-finish thriller. The fact that the defending Olympic champion and the most dominant female sprinter of 2017, Elaine Thompson of Jamaica, finished fifth was every bit as stunning. In snapping a stretch of four straight Jamaican wins at the Olympics and worlds, Bowie became the first U.S. woman to win the world title at 100 meters since Carmelita Jeter in 2011. Bowie’s lean at the finish line was so extreme, it sent Bowie off balance and careening into Lane 8, where she landed on her left hip while the runner in that lane, Murielle Ahoure, had to slow down, then jump to avoid landing on her.
TENNIS
Keys outslugs Vandeweghe at Stanford — Third-seeded Madison Keys beat No. 6 CoCo Vandeweghe 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Sunday to win the Bank of the West Classic in a thrilling display of power and serving by the two young American stars in their first career matchup. Keys won her third career singles title and first on hardcourt playing under cloudless skies at Stanford. The 22-year-old Keys had never won a championship on home soil.
Zverev dominates Anderson in Washington — Eighth-ranked Alexander Zverev easily dispatched South African veteran Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Citi Open in Washington for his fourth ATP title of the year. Only Roger Federer has more titles this season, with five. Zverev, a 20-year-old German, did not lose a set after his opening match against Jordan Thompson. The win was Zverev’s first of his career on an outdoor hard court and gives him momentum heading into the U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 28.
Russian wins lackluster final — Ekaterina Makarova of Russia rallied to beat Julia Goerges of Germany 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-0 to take the women’s title in a draw that lost much of its star power when second-ranked Simona Halep retired because she felt ill in the Washington summer heat. Makarova and Halep were tied at a set apiece when Halep retired in their quarterfinal match. The 58th-ranked Makarova, 29, earned her third career title and first since 2014.
BASEBALL
Mariners acquire Alonso from A’s — The Seattle Mariners acquired All-Star first baseman Yonder Alonso from the Oakland Athletics on Sunday for minor league outfielder Boog Powell. Alonso, 30, is hitting .266 with 17 doubles, 22 home runs and 49 RBIs. He ranks second among American League first basemen with a .527 slugging percentage. Alonso, a left-handed hitter, could platoon at first base with Danny Valencia. Alonso has 18 home runs, 40 RBIs and a .948 OPS against right-handed pitching this year.
