Doris Dewhurst Sholes, 95, of Bend, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2017, in Bend. Doris was born on January 30, 1922, in Gooding, ID, to Joseph Wilson Dewhurst and Kristine Albertine (Edvardson) Dewhurst.
The Dewhurst family, moved to Bend from Winnemucca, Nevada, in 1935. Doris attended Bend schools and married Forrest C. “Poe” Sholes in 1940. Poe was born in Bend in 1919, a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. Poe’s lifelong career was in law enforcement, serving as sheriff of Deschutes County for 28 years.
A memorial service will be held on August 26, 2017, at Suntree Community Hall, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR, at 3 p.m. Please come and visit, and share your memories of Doris.Doris was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. Her mother, Kristine, emigrated from Norway in 1914. She credited her long and healthy life to her Scandinavian roots.
Doris was quite talented in many areas; sewing, upholstery, wall papering, and quilting were just a few. She was the Deschutes Pioneer Queen in 2002. She loved family gatherings and especially treasured visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Lennard (Delane) Sholes, of Bend; Jon (Nanette) Sholes, of Bend; Susie (Steve) Gutenberger, of Longview, WA. Grandchildren; Scott Sholes, Terri Long, Stacey Sholes, Steffanie Sholes, Scott Reedy and Bryan Reedy; and nine great-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by husband Poe, who passed in 2000; her parents; brothers, Thomas, Walter and Daniel Dewhurst; and sisters, Helen Rumbaugh, Jane Wilson and Beatrice Moen.
