Eclipse wows Central Oregon

People all over Central Oregon witnessed the solar eclipse Monday morning, an event that some said they would never forget.

In Madras, where thousands gathered to see the eclipse from within the path of totality, one observer described it as “worth the hype. … the most surreal and moving thing I think I’ve ever scene.” The Lowell Observatory reported the temperature dropped 20 degrees in Madras.

Dozens of cars pulled over beside U.S. Highway 97 between Madras and Terrebonne to watch the event.

In Bend, the crowd on Pilot Butte cheered and applauded at 10:21 a.m. as the moon covered the sun. Boaters on the Deschutes River pulled to shore to experience it. Staffers and patients at St. Charles Bend donned their eclipse shades and viewed the event from the hospital grounds.
