Bend man accused of driving into runners — A runner participating in the Hood to Coast relay in Columbia County is accused of stealing a pickup and driving through a field where runners were resting, injuring a woman before fleeing the scene. David Jon Blackmon, of Bend, was later taken into custody. He faces assault, reckless driving, possession of a stolen vehicle and DUII charges. Witnesses said a man took a pickup belonging to a portable restroom company at about 2 a.m. Saturday at an exchange point near Birkenfeld. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said the man drove the truck into the field and ran over runner Cynthia Gillespie, of Canby. The driver fled and Oregon State Police found Blackmon in the woods nearby, according to an Oregonian newspaper report. It wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer.

Southwest Oregon fire — The Chetco Bar Fire in southwest Oregon grew to cover about 168 square miles by Sunday. Residents living in the nearby town of Brookings, on the coast, remained under a preliminary evacuation notice. The fire is about 5 miles northeast of the town in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The fire was started July 12 by a lightning strike and has continued to grow due to hot, dry conditions. Officials said dead and downed timber along with dried out grasses are making conditions hazardous for firefighters. They set an estimated containment date of Oct. 15.

Elowah Falls rescue — An American Medical Response team rescued a hiker who suffered life-threatening injuries after falling on a trail above Elowah Falls near Ainsworth State Park on the Columbia River Gorge in Multnomah County. Officials said they were called at about 10 a.m. Saturday after nearby hikers heard the man fall and called for help. The man was hiking above the falls and fell about 150 feet and landed in the creek. The hikers pulled the injured man out of the water provided first aid until the rescue team arrived. The team and paramedics loaded the man into a rescue basket and used a rope system to get him up short vertical segments to reach the trail. Once out of the park, the man was taken by ambulance to a helicopter, which carried him to a Portland hospital.

I-5 fatalities — Two people died in separate car crashes on Interstate 5 in Oregon over the weekend. An Albany man died after his 1995 Ford Explorer crashed around 3 a.m. Saturday on I-5 in Marion County. Oregon State Police say 27-year-old Ricardo Lemus was driving alone. He lost control and overturned in the median. He was ejected and died at the scene. In another fatal single-vehicle crash on I-5 Saturday, 58-year-old Bruce Anthony Curtis of Grants Pass veered off the highway in his 2000 BMW after taking the 33 northbound off ramp in Central Point before 6 p.m. The car went into a field, rolled and landed on its top. Police said witnesses reported being passed by the BMW at a high rate of speed before the crash. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Curtis dead on scene.

Hot weather in Portland — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Portland area as temperatures are expected to climb back up into the upper 90s and possibly into triple digits in the coming days. Three cooling centers are open in Multnomah County on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to help seniors, people with disabilities and other health conditions to stay safe. The centers will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Pets and children are welcome at all three locations, and each location will also have activities including board games and movies.
