Brand-new Bend band AM Clouds arrives confident and fully formed on its three-song debut EP, “War of Love.” That’s quite a feat for a band that’s only been together for a year and a half, according to a press release announcing the EP, but not so surprising once you dig a little deeper.
Like many Bend institutions, the band is made up of transplants: two former Portlanders — lead vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Bruce Moon and bassist Pete Ficht — and two Californians — rhythm guitarist Graham Boostrom and drummer Dan Paggi. And like many musicians who come to Central Oregon, all four have a wealth of experience fronting bands (Moon’s The Very Foundation and Sclera; Boostrom’s Dionysos) and supporting other musicians such as King Black Acid (Ficht).
It all comes together on “War of Love,” which focuses on strong songwriting and establishes the band firmly in the alt-rock/grunge sounds of the Pacific Northwest’s recent past. The title track builds on a descending riff and bouncing rhythm, as Moon and Paggi harmonize on the heraldic, fuzzed-out choruses. Track two, “Written By Himself,” is a close cousin to Big Star’s proto-power-pop with another winning melody from Moon.
But it’s not all throwback sounds. The five-minute closing track “Mystery” anchors the EP, giving Moon a chance to let loose on guitar. The song’s yearning melody and lyrics point toward great things to come from the group.
AM Clouds at Bend Roots Revival: 4:15 p.m. Sept. 30; Deschutes Brewery warehouse, 399 SW Shevlin Hixon Drive, Bend; riseupinternational.com.
