Summit boasts the kind of depth that state championship teams wish they had. But even the Storm are grateful to have Haley Smith back in the lineup.

A year after suffering a season-ending ACL tear in her left knee, Smith has returned with force for Summit. And on Thursday night, she continued her stellar comeback campaign with 13 kills in the Storm’s 25-17, 25-12, 25-20 nonconference home win over Marist of Eugene.

“It’s great having her back,” Summit coach Jill Waskom said of Smith. “I’m just so happy for her, that in her senior year she’s back and strong and having a good time on the court.”

The Storm’s Jade Waskom had 11 kills, and Hannah Billings was 9-for-10 serving with two aces for Summit, which has opened the season with wins over Churchill, Corvallis and Marist — three programs that in recent years have been regular Class 5A state title contenders.

“It’s good to start off strong,” Jill Waskom said. “We’ve had bits of adversity, which you want in a tough nonconference schedule, and we’ve fought through those. That’s a great sign of success to come.”
