Bend’s Jacob Hollister became the first Mountain View High School graduate to make an NFL roster on Saturday when the New England Patriots named the undrafted rookie tight end to their 53-man roster.

Jacob’s twin brother, Cody, who was also with the Patriots through the preseason as an undrafted free agent, was placed on waivers. If he clears waivers, Cody could be named to the Patriots’ practice squad.

Jacob Hollister opened the preseason with a seven-catch, 116-yard performance in the Patriots’ 31-24 loss to Jacksonville. The 6-foot-4, 239-pounder out of Wyoming finished the preseason with 12 receptions on 15 targets for 146 yards and a touchdown.

According to pro-football-reference.com, Jacob Hollister is just the seventh Central Oregon player to make an NFL roster and the first to be on an NFL roster since kicker Ryan Longwell, a 1992 Bend High graduate, retired following the 2012 season.

Cody Hollister, 6-4 and 209 pounds out of Arkansas, had two catches for 40 yards and a TD on five targets in the preseason.

The Hollisters graduated from Mountain View in 2012 after leading the Cougars to the Oregon Class 5A state championship in 2011.

Two-year starter Rubin among Seahawks cut

The Seattle Seahawks released veteran defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin, backup quarterback Trevone Boykin and wide receiver Kasen Williams as part of their roster moves to reach the 53-man limit Saturday.

The decision to release Boykin means Seattle will go into the season with just veteran Austin Davis as the backup to Russell Wilson. Boykin had served as Wilson’s backup a year ago but was inconsistent during the preseason while Davis played well in the final two exhibition games.

Seattle also made a pair of trades, sending defensive end Cassius Marsh to New England in exchange for fifth- and seventh-round picks and acquiring offensive lineman Isaiah Battle from Kansas City in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick.

Seattle’s initial 53-man roster featured 10 offensive linemen — including undrafted rookie Jordan Roos — and eight defensive linemen. Rubin is not part of that defensive line group after being with the Seahawks for the past two seasons, starting all 32 games in the regular season.

The decision to cut Rubin was made easier by the acquisition of Sheldon Richardson from the New York Jets on Friday and will save Seattle money against the salary cap in each of the next two seasons.

Cutting Williams was the bigger surprise after a stellar preseason in which he led the NFC with 208 yards receiving in four games. Williams’ spot appeared safe after Jermaine Kearse was sent to the Jets as part of the Richardson trade.

49ers cut WR Kerley, DL Dial

The San Francisco 49ers cut last season’s leading receiver Jeremy Kerley and veteran defensive lineman Quinton Dial on Saturday as they remained committed to youth in the first year of a rebuilding plan under coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.

Kerley and Dial were the most notable cuts as the team announced its initial 53-man roster.

The 28-year-old Kerley had 64 catches for 664 yards last season and then signed an $8.4 million, three-year contract to stay in San Francisco. The stay ended up being a short one, but he will still get $2.8 million in guaranteed money from the deal. Kerley was deemed expendable in part because of the play of fifth-round pick Trent Taylor as a slot receiver and the performance of free-agent acquisitions Pierre Garcon, Marquise Goodwin and Aldrick Robinson.

“That was a tough one,” Lynch said. “We made a decision on Jeremy early. One of the harsh realities of this league is that Jeremy was a victim of circumstance. We didn’t have any of these receivers on our roster.”

The 27-year-old Dial also was a regular last season, starting 11 of his 14 games. But San Francisco is looking to build the line behind three recent first-round draft picks in former Oregon standouts Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner, and this year’s No. 32 overall pick, Solomon Thomas.

Calhoun among Raiders cuts

The Oakland Raiders waived 2016 third-round pick Shilique Calhoun and placed free-agent acquisition Jelani Jenkins on season-ending injured reserve.

The moves with the two linebackers were the most notable Saturday as the Raiders trimmed their roster to the 53-man limit. Oakland also waived Ben Heeney, last year’s season-opening starter at inside linebacker, with a nonfootball injury.

Jenkins was a prominent defensive free-agent acquisition this offseason, but he will be sidelined with an undisclosed injury. Linebacker remains a position of need for Oakland, with fifth-rounder Marquel Lee, Cory James and Tyrell Adams the top options to play alongside Bruce Irvin.

Undrafted rookie linebacker Nicholas Morrow out of Division III Greenville (Illinois) University also made the team and will be in the mix.
