Kylee Roath scored two of her three goals in the second half, including the tiebreaking strike on a direct kick in the 69th minute, to lead Bend High to a 3-2 girls soccer victory Thursday over Summit on the Lava Bears’ 15th Street Field.

In the Intermountain Conference opener for both teams, Roath’s first goal in the fifth minute put Class 5A No. 6-ranked Bend up 1-0. The Storm tied the match five minutes later on Piper Flannery’s goal, assisted by Maggi McElrath, then McElrath’s goal in the 22nd minute, assisted by Alexandra Walker, gave Summit a 2-1 halftime lead.

Roath got the Lava Bears even in the 52nd minute, scoring off a corner kick by Julia Fecteau. Roath’s third goal gave the lead back to Bend, but things never got comfortable for the Bears in the closing minutes.

“It was still a battle,” insisted Bend coach Gavin Meyers. “It always is with Summit. It’s never easy with them.”

Meyers praised the second-half play of sophomore Jenna Cornett in goal for the Lava Bears.

“She kept us in the game, for sure,” said Meyers.

Bend (1-0 IMC, 3-0-1 overall) plays a nonconference home game Saturday against Wilsonville. Next up for Summit (0-1, 3-2) is a home IMC match Tuesday against Redmond.
