Rankin’ Joe to perform in Bend

Simmer Down Sounds continues to book not just the most recognizable names in reggae, but the genre’s criminally underrated innovators as well. Rankin’ Joe, who performs at the Domino Room on Friday, falls into this latter category. The reggae DJ and toaster started out as DJ Jolly and then later Little Joe in the ’70s in Jamaica, scoring hits such as “Gun Court” and “A You Mr. Finnigan” and working with legendary DJ U-Roy and producers Sly & Robbie. He also developed a rapid-fire rapping style that has gone on to influence other reggae DJs such as Eek-A-Mouse and U.S. hip-hop artists such as Heavy D. Based in New York City, Rankin’ Joe continues to tour the world with bands and soundsystems, and last year released the single “Bad Boy Stepping” in collaboration with producer Jstar. DJ Biggz and DJ Colonel (host of 92.9-FM’s “Simmer Down Reggae Hour” and owner of Simmer Down Sounds) will also perform.
Rankin’ Joe, with DJ Biggz, DJ Colonel: 8 p.m. Friday; $17 plus fees in advance, $20 at the door; Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend; djcolonelsimmerdown.com, bendticket.com or 541-408-4329.
