Animated show takes on puberty

Juvenile humor isn’t always a bad thing in an adult TV series. Case in point: “Big Mouth,” the new Netflix animated show from Nick Kroll and others which probably should be called “Potty Mouth.”

The first season of the very adult show about kids facing puberty is available for streaming on Friday, Sept. 29.

Created by Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, “Big Mouth” focuses on a pair of best friends, Nick (Kroll) and Andrew (John Mulaney) who are not dealing very well with the onset of puberty. For that matter, neither are their friends Missy (Jenny Slate) and Jessi (Jessi Klein).

The ten episodes are graphic, not only visually (anthropomorphized male genitalia) but in their use of sexual slang. The boys are always haunted by the Hormone Monster (voiced by Kroll) while the girls have their own hormonal nightmare in the form of Connie the Hormone Monstress (Maya Rudolph).

Unlike, say, “South Park,” the focus here is almost entirely on sex, because with their hormones doing loop-the-loops, even the most mundane parts of the kids’ lives can trigger unwanted emotional or physical responses.

Other voice talent includes Fred Armisen, Richard Kind, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele (as the ghost of Duke Ellington — really), Andrew Rannells, Kat Dennings, Zach Woods and Paula Pell.

As over the top as some of the bits are, “Big Mouth” is likely to strike a chord of remembrance in adult viewers. If so, the memories probably won’t be quite as filthy or funny as they are here.
