A GO!-to guide for Halloween events in Central Oregon

Published 7:56 am Friday, October 27, 2017

Whether it’s tricks or treats you seek, all you need to do is take a peek at what Central Oregon has in store, and explore. Zombies, haunted houses, trick-or-treating, parties and costume-clad cyclocross racers are just a few of the highlights.

Need some prefunc activities, too? Opportunities abound for pumpkin patch harvests, carving a jack-o’-lantern, costume party plotting and planning out a night a full of events to satisfy even an enthusiast’s Halloween fix.

Halloween parties

The 21 and older crowd will find Halloween-themed cocktails and costume contests with generous prizes at several nighttime hot spots around Bend: Worthy Brewing’s Dance of the Dead, Velvet’s Murder Mystery Party and Deschutes Brewery’s annual Galacticross Party are three of the bigger events to consider.

The Dance of the Dead is a ticketed event at Worthy Brewing, inviting participants to dress up, eat and drink and, most importantly, dance. DJ Harlo and DJ Dojah will be spinning music and there will be live performances and virtual reality demonstrations.

The annual Deschutes Brewery Warehouse party draws a large crowd every year. This year’s party is celestial-themed, so time to break out the E.T. costumes and cosmic hair styles. There will be space cocktails, food and live performances by Con Brio and Smoked Out Soul. ARC in Movement and Ona Monsoon will also perform. The party begins at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Velvet is inviting lounge guests to take part in a murder mystery the night of Halloween. They haven’t announced the details of the party, but participants are asked to dress 1950s “Clue”-style and invited to take their “mugshots” in a photo booth.

Volcanic Theatre Pub will host a “Pulp Fiction” tribute concert on Halloween, with folk duo the Shook Twins performing.

Trick-or-treating

While many locals haunt their own neighborhoods in search of candy, Central Oregon has a few alternatives.

Central Oregon Community College’s Halloween Hall has become a tradition that’s fun for kids and college students. Parents and kids 12 and under can wear their costumes to go trick or treat inside the college’s Wickiup Hall, where students are waiting to hand out candy. Students also plan Halloween-themed activities and games for the kids. The event takes place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

One block of southbound Sixth Street, between Cascade Avenue and Black Butte Boulevard, in downtown Redmond, will be closed to cars from 4 to 6 p.m. Children can fill the streets and trick or treat at local merchants. Participating shops will have bright orange pumpkins on their front windows.

The Village at Sunriver will also host trick-or-treaters of all ages on Halloween. In addition to merchants handing out candy, there will be games, a costume contest and a cupcake walk from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Active Halloween

Break out the sneakers and work off a little bit of candy with an active Halloween event.

Hundreds of cyclists come from across Oregon to take part in the Cyclocross Crusade. On Sunday, the cyclists will meet at Deschutes Brewery at 8:30 a.m. in full costume to race around the Old Mill District area.

If you’re not riding, bring a cow bell and prepare to jump around with enthusiasm as you cheer on the racers. It’s not uncommon for the crowd to hand out beers, a strip of bacon or even a $1 bill to racers as they go past.

Halloween lovers looking to do something with their children can take part in the Monster Dash or Little Monster Mile. The Monster Dash is a 5K run/walk starting at the Athletic Club of Bend and going toward the Old Mill District. Runners and walkers are also encouraged to wear costumes for the race.

The Little Monster Mile is a 1-mile Halloween-themed race for kids.

Haunted house

In addition to the annual Scaregrounds at the
Deschutes County Fairgrounds, where zombies lurk while waiting to pounce on visitors, the Central Oregon Collective is hosting its first haunted house this year in Bend.

“It’s a large space, so lots of twists and turns and different things in different rooms,” said Audra McMurray, Central Oregon Collective’s senior marketing director. The traditional haunted house will be equipped with decorations, special effects and about 25 actors haunting the hallways each night.

McMurray said visitors can expect “about 8,000 square feet of spooky fun.”
