Catalan club stuns Madrid — Girona earned a shock victory over Real Madrid that was celebrated by many throughout Catalonia on Sunday. The small Catalan club stunned Madrid, the team of the Spanish establishment, with a 2-1 come-from-behind win in the Spanish league — just days after the wealthy northeastern region declared independence to heighten tensions in a dispute with the central government. Pro-independence politicians were quick to celebrate. “Girona’s victory over one of the great teams in the world is an example and a reference for many situations,” tweeted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont. It was Madrid’s first trip to Catalonia since Spain’s political crisis escalated. The match was played after hundreds of thousands of Catalans took to the streets of Barcelona to voice their opposition to the unilateral declaration of independence.

Men’s opener canceled— The first race of the men’s alpine World Cup season was canceled because of bad weather conditions. The giant slalom race, which will not be rescheduled, had been in doubt since gale-force storms and snowfall had been predicted for the Rettenbach glacier in Austria on Sunday. Bend’s Tommy Ford will have to wait to make his season debut either in the speed races at Lake Louise, Alberta, on Nov. 25-26, or the following week at Beaver Creek in Colorado.

Gators, McElwain agree to part ways — Florida and coach Jim McElwain have agreed to part ways a day after a third consecutive loss and nearly a week after he said his players and their families had received death threats. Athletic director Scott Stricklin made the announcement Sunday and named defensive coordinator Randy Shannon the team’s interim coach for the final four games. The parties are negotiating McElwain’s $12.5 million buyout. McElwain went 22-12 with the Gators.

TENNIS

Venus Williams loses WTA championship match — Caroline Wozniacki won the biggest title of her career when she beat Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 in the WTA Finals on Sunday. The 27-year-old Wozniacki’s best previous result at the WTA Finals was reaching the final in 2010. Williams, who was hoping to win a 50th career title Sunday, was the only player at this year’s WTA Finals who did not win a title during the season. The 37-year-old Williams appeared in three finals at the five most prestigious tournaments of the season: the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and here in Singapore. Williams, who won the WTA Finals title in 2008, had won all seven previous matches against Wozniacki.

Federer gets hometown win — Roger Federer finally beat Juan Martin del Potro in a Swiss Indoors final, winning 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 Sunday to go clear in second place on the Open era title list. Federer’s 95th ATP tournament win — the eighth in his hometown Basel event where he was once a ballboy — lifted him out of a tie with Ivan Lendl, trailing only Jimmy Connors who has 109. The top-seeded Federer succeeded on the same court where he lost the 2012 and 2013 Basel finals to del Potro. Federer improved to 7-1 in finals this season.

Pouille earns 3rd title this season — Lucas Pouille won his third title of the season and fourth overall after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 6-4 in an all-French final at the Erste Bank Open on Sunday in Vienna. The 25th-ranked Pouille had not won a set against Tsonga in their two previous matches, which included the final in Marseille in February. His victory at the indoor hard-court event made Pouille the only player on the tour this year to win on all three surfaces, after earlier triumphs on clay (Budapest) and grass (Stuttgart).
