9 Mountain View Cougars take 1st at Bend Invitational

ALBANY — The championship bracket of the Northwest Duals wrestling tournament will have Central Oregon flavor after strong showings by Mountain View, Redmond High and Bend High during Thursday’s pool play.

Mountain View went 5-0 to place first in the Dick Weisbrodt pool of the 35-team dual-format tournament, defeating Springfield 78-6, McMinnville 72-4, Central Linn 66-10, Lebanon 63-15, and Century 48-22. Redmond, meanwhile, took second in the Jim Phillips pool after wins against Milwaukie (47-32), Cleveland (57-18), Sweet Home (54-27) and Central (51-27). The Panthers’ lone loss was to Sprague, 40-28. In the Brent Belveal pool, Bend defeated McKay 57-18, Glencoe 49-30 and South Albany 61-16, but the Lava Bears lost to Cascade 52-27 and Newberg 66-6 to place third.

The three Central Oregon programs qualified for the 16-team championship bracket, which kicks off Friday at the Linn County Expo Center.

Nick Valenti, at 106 pounds, and Jacob Conklin, at 220, paced Mountain View with matching 4-0 records — each win by fall — in Thursday’s pool play. Beau Ohlson had three pins at 132 to help the Cougars win their pool.

For Redmond, 182-pounder Wyatt Gross went 5-0 with four falls spanning 4 minutes, 23 seconds, while Kagen Lawrence had four pins in as many matches at 106, spending a mere 3:28 on the mat en route to a flawless record. Also for the Panthers, Bailey Fisher was 4-0 with three falls at 160.

Haakon Kjellesvik led the way for Bend with a 5-0 record at 182, including three falls.

2 Bulldogs in Classic quarters: RENO, Nev. — Lorenzo Vasquez, at 120 pounds, and Cylus Hoke, at 195, each went 3-0 on the first day of the Sierra Nevada Classic to advance to the quarterfinals of the 86-team tournament. Seeded second, Vasquez recorded two falls, including a 27-second pin in the second round. Hoke moved into the quarters via his lone fall of the day, a second-period pin in the third round. Still alive in consolation rounds for Culver are 160-pounders Jerron Rhen and Victor Torres. The Bulldogs head into the tourney’s final day tied for 30th with 50.5 points. Lakeland (Idaho) leads the field with 118 points.

Boys basketball

Bend 60, Grants Pass 51: Brian Warinner poured in 21 points to help the Lava Bears hold off a Grants Pass rally on the first day of the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest at Summit High. Bend (7-2) held a 24-15 halftime lead until the Cavemen narrowed the gap to six points heading into the fourth quarter. The Lava Bears, though, outscored Grants Pass 18-15 in the final period to secure the win. Brock Mesarich hit three 3-pointers for nine points for Bend, and Justin Kerr added eight points.

Mountain View 59, Pendleton 33: The Cougars trailed 13-7 after the first quarter but quickly rebounded to cruise past Pendleton on the first day of the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest at Mountain View High. Chase McClain was 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range and finished with 22 points for Mountain View (6-3), while Matt Van Tassell chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Summit 102, Madras 56: Karson Klecker racked up a school-record 37 points to lead the Storm to a program-record 102 points and a win on the first day of the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest at Summit High. Jacob Tompkins added 18 points for Summit (3-3), while Kincade Mickel and Joe Hicks each scored 12. Summit’s Beau Blea, who finished with five points, dished out a school-record 16 assists. Tyler Lockey paced Madras (2-7) with 16 points, Byron Patt had 12 points, and Kahne Herkshan scored 10.

Battle Ground (Wash.) 69, Redmond 47: ASTORIA — Redmond coach Reagan Gilbertson called it a “lethargic” showing by the Panthers on the opening day of the Vince Dulich Tournament. Down 14-7 after one quarter, the Panthers were unable to work their way back into the game despite 14 points by Conner Lennie. Josh Hair added 11 points and Dylan Taylor scored nine for Redmond (3-5).

Sisters 47, Estacada 39: SISTERS — The Outlaws led throughout and made their free throws down the stretch to open the Sisters Holiday Tournament with a win. Ty Horner had 16 points to lead Sisters (6-3), Jack Berg added 15 points, and Isaiah Rush scored 10.

Waldport 56, La Pine 54: LINCOLN CITY — La Pine overcame a slow start, turning an 18-6 first-quarter deficit into a back-and-forth game before losing on the first day of the Kiwanis Holiday Tournament. Jeremy Smith had 13 points, four assists and four steals to lead the Hawks (2-7). Wyatt Oldham had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Chandler George had three blocked shots for La Pine.

Bend JV 66, Culver 36: Weston Basl scored 14 points and Matt Krueger had 11 points and four steals, but Culver fell in its first game of the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest JV Tournament at Summit High. It was the fourth straight loss for the Bulldogs (1-10), who trailed 35-21 at halftime. Caden Mathisen hit five 3-pointers and led the Bend JV with 24 points.

Triangle Lake 55, Central Christian 26: FINN ROCK — Triangle Lake jumped to a 16-6 first-quarter lead and cruised to a win on the first day of the 1A Hoops Classic. Luke Hannay paced Central Christian (3-3) with eight points, and Jace Mills added seven points.

Summit 60, Reynolds 10: The Storm opened a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and led 31-3 at the half in a win at the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest at Summit High. Olivia Loberg led Summit (2-3) with 14 points, and Hailee Neibauer added 10 points. Healy Bledsoe finished with eight points and seven rebounds for the Storm.

Bend 52, Madras 44: Cambree Scott put up 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead the home Lava Bears on the opening day of the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest. Kylee Roath scored 10 points for Class 5A Bend (7-3), which led 25-23 at halftime and pulled away by outscoring the 4A White Buffaloes 17-11 in the third quarter. Jalaney Suppah and Jiana Smith-Francis each scored 10 points to lead Madras (7-2).

Ridgeview 57, Putnam 45: Rylee Troutman logged 11 points and eight rebounds to help the Ravens to a win at the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest at Pacific Crest Middle School, snapping Ridgeview’s two-game skid. Aspen Jeter had 11 points and six assists for the Ravens (3-6), Alaina Clark supplied eight points, and Cassidy Nelson provided Ridgeview with a defensive spark off the bench and also chipped in with six points while.

Pendleton 49, Mountain View 40: A late charge cut a 36-21 third-quarter deficit to five points with two minutes left, but that was as close as the home Cougars got on the opening day of the Oregon Holiday Hoopfest. Freshman Liliana Overcash led Mountain View with 12 points on four 3-pointers, including three to fuel the Cougars’ fourth-quarter run. Bailey Dickerson scored 10 points and Mia Morey added nine for Mountain View (4-4), whose four-game winning streak was snapped.

Astoria 51, Redmond 23: ASTORIA — The Panthers (2-5) fell on the first day of the Vince Dulich Tournament.

Estacada 45, Sisters 37: SISTERS — Down 12-2 early, Sisters spent the rest of the game trying to catch up but came up short on the first day of the Sisters Holiday Tournament. Kaylee Huber, Alexa Stewart and Gracen Sundstrom scored nine points apiece for the Outlaws (3-5), and Stewart and Sundstrom each had six rebounds.

Waldport 38, La Pine 31: LINCOLN CITY — The Hawks trimmed a 10-point deficit to just three points but could not complete the comeback on the first day of the Kiwanis Holiday Tournament. Cortney Wolf led La Pine (3-8) with eight points, four assists, four steals and four rebounds, and Stephanie Westbrook had seven points and five boards.

Triangle Lake 40, Central Christian 21: FINN ROCK — The Tigers led 8-7 after the first quarter but were held scoreless in the second period and were outscored 28-13 in the second half en route to a loss on the first day of the 1A Hoops Classic. Faith Lyons scored seven points for Central Christian (0-6), and Savannah Poole and Heather Brunoe each had five points.
