OT goal lifts Rangers past Sabres in Winter Classic — J.T. Miller scored a power-play goal 2:43 into overtime to lift the New York Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday in the NHL’s 10th Winter Classic at Citi Field in New York. Paul Carey and Michael Grabner scored in the first period for the Rangers, who improved to 4-0 in regular season outdoor games. Henrik Lundqvist, who has been in goal for all four of the wins, stopped 31 shots to help New York improve to 6-2-3 in its last 11 overall. Rasmus Ristolainen had a goal and an assist, Sam Reinhart also scored and Kyle Okposo had two assists for the Sabres. Robin Lehner finished with 39 saves for Buffalo, which has just 10 wins this season but is 4-3-5 in its last 12 games.

Gionta named captain as U.S. unveils Olympic roster — Veteran winger Brian Gionta will serve as captain of the U.S. Olympic hockey team at the Winter Olympics, which will be the first without NHL players since 1994. USA Hockey announced its roster Monday at the Winter Classic in New York. It includes college players Troy Terry, Jordan Greenway, Will Borgen and Ryan Donato. Without the ability to name NHL stars like Patrick Kane, Johnny Gaudreau, Auston Matthews and Jonathan Quick, the U.S. roster is a mix of players from the NCAA ranks, European professional leagues and the American Hockey League. AHL star Chris Bourque and a handful of former NHL players now in Europe, including Mark Arcobello, Jim Slater, James Wisniewski and Bobby Sanguinetti, are expected to help Gionta on the leadership front. Ryan Zapolski, who plays for Jokerit in the Kontinental Hockey League, is the only goaltender on the roster so far, with two more to be added later in January.

Shiffrin matches idol with 37th World Cup win — Mikaela Shiffrin won a parallel slalom city event in Oslo, Norway, on Monday to match her childhood idol, Marlies Schild, with her 37th World Cup victory. Shiffrin pumped her fist violently after edging Swiss rival Wendy Holdener in the final of a night race made complicated by fog and mist. “For me, this is totally different than GS or slalom, or a traditional ski race because you have the person next to you. And I always know that my competitors really want to win — everybody wants to win,” Shiffrin said. Shiffrin, the 22-year-old American standout, and Schild, the retired Austrian slalom specialist, are now joint sixth on the list of all-time winners that Lindsey Vonn tops with 78 victories. It was the seventh win overall and second in parallel this season for Shiffrin, who is favored to defend her Olympic slalom title at the Pyeongchang Games next month.

Rockets’ Harden out at least 2 weeks — Rockets star James Harden will miss at least two weeks with a left hamstring strain. The team announced Monday that the NBA’s leading scorer has a grade 2 strain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Harden was injured on a missed layup late in the fourth quarter of Houston’s 148-142 double-overtime win against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night. He said after the game that he didn’t think the injury was serious, but the guard was walking with a pronounced limp.
