A Bend activist made his first appearance in Deschutes County Circuit Court on Thursday for alleging attempting to break into a church off-hours with a firearm.
A grand jury indicted Yajnesa Dharmarajah, 44, on Jan. 18 for first degree burglary, first degree criminal mischief, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a burglary tool, which in this case was a pry bar.
Dharmarajah has been out of custody since his arrest in the early morning of Oct. 4 outside the Westside Church in Bend. Police say they found him wearing a ski mask, and discovered several areas around the church damaged “in a way consistent with an attempted break-in.”
Dharmarajah is a commissioner on the Oregon Council on Civil Rights. His LinkedIn profile states he has worked in labor relations in Seattle and Bend.
On Thursday, Judge Randy Miller imposed several conditions of release on Dharmarajah, including to not contact Westside Church and to continue any mental health treatments he’s currently receiving.
He’s scheduled to make his initial plea on March 8.
