5 individual champs help La Pine to district title

GLIDE — With five individual district champions leading the way, La Pine posted 230 points to take first at the Class 3A Special District 4 wrestling championships Saturday.

The top three finishers in each weight class qualified for the state meet in Portland, which is scheduled for Feb. 16-17 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Highlighting the Hawks at districts was 126-pounder Tommy Gallamore, who recorded two falls, each in less than a minute, on his way to the title. Alex Dudley, at 132, also had two first-period pins for La Pine, and Dominic Norquist went 3-0 with three falls at 138. Other champs for the Hawks were Derrik Kerr at 120 and Turrell Wilson at 145.

Taking second for La Pine were Logen Matthews (106), Trentyn Tennant (160), Michael Heutzenroeder (182) and Daniel Underwood (195). La Pine’s Cheyenne Tobin was third at 113.

Bulldogs claim nine titles: GLENDALE — A whopping 15 wrestlers qualified for the state championships as Culver cruised to a Class 2A/1A Special District 3 championship with 417 points. Central Linn was second with 201 points. The Bulldogs boasted nine individual district champs: Brody Piercey (106), Lorenzo Vasquez (120), Orlando Torres (126), Lane Downing (132), Jorge Olivera (145), Victor Torres (152), Jerron Rhen (160), Joey Navarro (182) and Cylus Hoke (195). Taking second for Culver were Jordan Piercy at 106, Anthony Hood at 113, Cooper Becker at 132, Hunter Augustynovich at 145, Joseph Russo at 170 and Martin Negrete at 285. The top two finishers in each weight class qualified for the state meet in Portland.

Boys basketball

Heppner 54, Culver 29: HEPPNER — The Bulldogs were outscored 21-13 in the fourth quarter as they lost in Columbia Basin Conference action. Weston Basl led Culver (0-7 CBC, 4-19 overall) with 16 points and four steals.

Chiloquin 50, Trinity Lutheran 33: CHILOQUIN — With their starting point guard sidelined by injury, the Saints of Bend struggled to find an offensive rhythm and fell in Mountain Valley League play. Matthew Eidler had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Trinity Lutheran (8-2 MVL, 15-6 overall).

Rogue Valley Adventist 61, Gilchrist 45: MEDFORD — The Grizzlies fell behind 23-13 in the first quarter and never recovered in a Mountain Valley League loss. Beau Burr and Ethan Hirshon each had 16 points for Gilchrist (1-10 MVL, 1-16 overall).

Triad 55, North Lake 22: SILVER LAKE — After trailing just 26-18 at the half, the Cowboys went cold over the final two quarters, at one point missing 19 straight shots during a Mountain Valley League loss. Elisha Roth paced North Lake (4-7 MVL, 11-10 overall) with six points.

Girls basketball

Culver 40, Heppner 29: HEPPNER — Irma Retano scored 17 points to lead the Bulldogs to a Columbia Basin Conference win. Elly Bautista had 11 points for Culver (5-2 CBC, 14-8 overall), which outscored Heppner 15-6 in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Also for the Bulldogs, Mia Gamboa scored nine points.

Rogue Valley Adventist 49, Gilchrist 26: MEDFORD — Rayenee Hoover had 10 points, but the Grizzlies were outscored 14-1 in the second quarter of a Mountain Valley League loss. Rylee Hoover added nine points for Gilchrist (0-9 MVL, 1-15 overall), and Skyla Newton had seven points.

Triad 41, North Lake 33: SILVER LAKE — Triad ran its winning streak to eight games by taking down North Lake in a Mountain Valley League contest. Rachel Baker scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds for the host Cowgirls (6-4 MVL, 13-7 overall), and Briana Church added 10 points.
