IOC rejects bid of 15 banned Russians — The International Olympic Committee has rejected a request to invite 15 Russians to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics just days after the athletes’ doping bans were overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The 13 active athletes and two retired athletes working in support roles were among a group of 28 athletes whose bans were overturned by CAS on Thursday. The IOC said in a statement Monday “the decision of the CAS had not lifted the suspicion of doping, or given the panel sufficient confidence to recommend … those 13 athletes could be considered as clean.” The IOC said the two coaches “should not be considered for an invitation” because of previous evidence available to the committee. On Sunday, IOC President Thomas Bach called the CAS ruling “extremely disappointing and surprising” and said it showed the Swiss-based CAS needs “reforms.” The IOC has invited 169 Russians to compete in Pyeongchang as “Olympic Athletes from Russia” under a neutral flag and has said it has a right to review and appeal the CAS decision.

SKIING

Vonn records 81st win ahead of Olympics — Lindsey Vonn won her second World Cup downhill of the weekend on Sunday in a perfect dress rehearsal for the Pyeongchang Olympics. It was the American’s third straight triumph in the discipline after also winning in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, two weeks ago. In a similar scenario to Saturday’s race, Vonn beat Sofia Goggia for the win. The American clocked 1 minute, 37.92 seconds on the Kandahar course to beat her Italian rival by 0.11 seconds, after edging her by just 0.02 the day before. Goggia won two consecutive downhills in January but crashed in the race where Vonn started her winning streak. Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was a hundredth of a second further behind in third. Vonn’s American teammate Stacey Cook crashed and was taken off the hill on a sled “as a precaution,” the U.S. ski team said, adding that Cook “is OK.” Another teammate, Jacqueline Wiles of Oregon, damaged her left knee in a crash Saturday and was ruled out of the Olympics. Bend’s Laurenne Ross finished 23rd after crashing Satruday.

Colon agrees to minor league contract with Rangers — The Texas Rangers have signed 44-year-old Bartolo Colon to a minor league contract and invited the pitcher to big league spring training. Colon was a combined 7-14 with a 6.48 ERA in 28 starts for Atlanta and Minnesota last season. He was released by the Braves in July, then signed with the Twins and went 5-6 with a 5.18 ERA in 15 starts for them. Colon has 240 career victories in 20 seasons with 10 different teams, including the Montreal Expos. The portly right-hander has posted 21 career wins against Texas, the most by any pitcher.

Linebacker Edwin Jackson among 2 killed on highway — The Indianapolis Colts say linebacker Edwin Jackson was one of two men killed when a suspected drunken driver struck them as they stood outside their car along a highway in Indianapolis. The Colts said in a statement Sunday that the team is “heartbroken” by Jackson’s death. The statement says the 26-year-old “was loved by all in the Colts organization.” State police identified the victims as Jackson, who grew up in Atlanta, and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, of Avon, Indiana. Police say they were killed when a suspected drunken driver struck them as they stood outside their car along Interstate 70 on Indianapolis’ west side. Authorities say the driver who struck them before dawn on Sunday tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured. Toxicology results are pending.
