Stabbing near Portland bus depot — Portland Police arrested a man accused of stabbing someone near the Greyhound bus station in Old Town Chinatown. Sgt. Chris Burley says the victim was found at 2 a.m. Monday and taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. Police found the suspect, Robert Bencomo, 33, at the west end of the Broadway Bridge. He was booked into the downtown jail on a charge of second-degree assault.

John Day tackles housing shortage — The city of John Day is creating a housing district to spur new home construction within city limits. City Manager Nick Green said John Day’s rental vacancy rate is less than 1 percent, creating an obstacle for employers trying to recruit workers. The city has secured state funding to create a housing district, and Green wants to incentivize new home building by waiving city fees. Other Eastern and Central Oregon communities are seeing similar housing shortages.

No snow: Mt. Ashland closes again — The mild winter has been difficult for the Mt. Ashland Ski Area. The mountain partially opened Jan. 25 following an overnight dump of 14 inches of snow. But mild conditions returned, and there’s not enough snow to continue operating. A statement on the ski park website says Mt. Ashland will remain closed until it receives more snow.
