Local track athletes stand out in Boise — Ryan Tennant, a Summit High senior, won the long jump and the triple jump at the Nike Boise Indoor track and field meet held Friday and Saturday in Idaho and earned bids to the New Balance Nationals Indoor, which is scheduled next month in New York. Tennant, representing Bend-based Mondo Track Club, won the boys high school long and triple jumps with marks of 23¼ feet and 46-3¾ feet, respectively. Also placing high for the Mondo boys were Noah Turnbull, who was fourth in the shot put and eighth in the weight throw; Jack Normand, who took fifth in the high jump and eighth in the triple jump; and Chad Ford, who placed seventh in the 800-meter run. Mondo’s A team finished fourth in the 800-meter relay. Redmond’s Treyson Conley was seventh in the boys 2-mile run and was 14th in the 1-mile run. In the girls competition, Mondo’s Catylynn Duff (shot put) and Piper Flannery (400) each placed third. Quin Fraley was fourth for Mondo in the 60 hurdles, Maddie Hagfors took fifth in the high jump, and Mondo’s A and B teams finished third and seventh, respectively, in the 800 relay. Competing unattached, Kelsey Swenson, of Bend, won the girls 1-mile run with a time of 5:16.95.

FOOTBALL

Summit, Culver linemen win partial scholarships — Cian Marderos, a senior lineman for Class 5A Summit this past fall, and Cole Little, a senior lineman for 2A Culver, have been recognized by the National Football Foundation Oregon Chapter as football scholar-athletes of the year for 2017. Marderos was among four 6A and 5A players selected, and Little was one of four chosen in 4A/3A/2A/1A. In all, 16 players from across the state received the honor. The two local players will receive partial college tuition scholarships and will be recognized at the NFFOC’s Scholar-Athlete Banquet held at the Red Lion Hotel on the River at Jantzen Beach in Portland on Feb. 25.
