Scott Wyman, playing the role of a person needing to be rescued, while participating in ice rescue training on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at Shevlin Pond in Bend. In the exercise, Procknow had to cross the ice and tie the rope around Wyman so they both could be pulled from the ice to the shore. The firefighters used the rope bags to demonstrate how to safely save someone who had fallen through the ice.
The Bend Fire Department purposely held the training on the thin ice, which would likely break open if someone walked across the pond.
Bend fire plans to find more ice-covered spots at Shevlin Pond for two more training sessions, scheduled for Thursday and Saturday.
