April Ann Hoisington-Kite, who had sex with a Deschutes County jail inmate while she was a kitchen worker at the jail, got a 10-day jail sentence and a $200 fine at her sentencing Monday in Deschutes County Circuit Court. She will also be on probation for three years.

The maximum sentence was five years and a $125,000 fine.

Hoisington-Kite, 44, was arrested Nov. 1 on two counts of custodial sexual misconduct for having sex with inmate Stephen Rechner while she was employed with Aramark, which provides food service to the Deschutes County jail.

Hoisington-Kite had no prior criminal convictions. Her attorney, Matthew Baughman, had asked for a jail sentence of only the two days she’s already served. But working against them was the fact that Hoisington-Kite violated her release agreement by accepting several phone calls from Rechner.

She briefly addressed Judge Alta Brady.

“I apologize to the jail, to everyone that I’ve hurt, especially my family,” she said. “I have a problem and I’m trying to deal with it. I was manipulated. I don’t know how to explain it — I become someone else when people are coming on to me. I just couldn’t help myself.”

Deputy District Attorney Cliff Lu said that though Rechner is technically the victim in this case, Hoisington-Kite is lucky she wasn’t seriously injured by him. Rechner has numerous felony convictions on his record, including for rape, identity theft and assault.

“You created a substantial security risk with your actions,” Brady said. “That’s why this is such a significant charge.”

Hoisington-Kite’s jail term is to begin Feb. 19.
