Where to GO! for stargazing

Astronomy nuts are spoiled with Central Oregon’s wide-open spaces and low light pollution. Even in the middle of Bend, you can take in the wonders of the universe. To really appreciate the night sky, though, make the trek out to Sparks Lake, which took the top spot for Where to GO! for stargazing.

Located roughly 25 miles west of Bend at the foot of Mt. Bachelor, Sparks Lake is a popular spot for fishing, nature watching and boating, all in the shadows of South Sister, Bachelor Butte and Broken Top. Once the sun sets, all that open space away from bright city lights lends itself to spectacular views of planets, stars, galaxies and our own Milky Way. Though there’s no camping in the day-use area, stargazers can snag a spot at nearby Soda Creek Campground, located on the entrance road to the lake.
