Bend-La Pine school district receives funds for snow damage expenses

The Bend-La Pine school district will receive $1.1 million in federal funding to reimburse it for expenses stemming from the historic snowfall last year that damaged buildings and caused the roof of the Highland Magnet at Kenwood School gym to collapse.

Oregon’s U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, both Democrats, announced the reimbursement Friday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The federal funds will cover the cost for engineering evaluations and snow removal that the district incurred while protecting its buildings from heavy snow that piled on roofs, according to the senators.

On Jan. 12, 2017, the roof of the gym at the Kenwood School caved in, a few hours before students started arriving for the day.
