Ducks win 2 more in Tempe — D.J. Sanders hit two home runs and both Shannon Rhodes and Gwen Svekis homered for the third time in as many games to start the season as No. 3 Oregon beat Cal State Northridge 15-6 in six innings in the second of two games for the Ducks on Friday at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona. Earlier Friday, sophomore Miranda Elish pitched a five-inning one-hitter and struck out nine in Oregon’s 8-0 win over Fresno State. Rhodes and Svekis hit back-to-back homers in the third inning against Fresno, and Lauren Lindvall hit a two-run single in the fifth to give the Ducks another run-rule victory. Oregon (3-0) has two games again Saturday, versus Missouri and UTEP.

Beavers open with 2 wins — Freshman Missy Nunes homered in each game Friday as Oregon State opened the season with wins over Oklahoma State and Indiana at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona. Nunes belted a two-run homer and Alysha Everett hit a two-run double in the Beavers’ 8-2 victory over Oklahoma State. Freshman Mariah Mazon pitched a complete game, striking out seven over seven innings to earn the win. Later, OSU overcame an early deficit to beat Indiana 4-1 behind Nunes’ solo homer and the five-hit pitching of Meehra Nelson. The Beavers (2-0) play twice again Saturday, against BYU and Georgia.

Tennis

Serena Williams’ return pushed back a day — Tennis fans anxiously awaiting Serena Williams’ return to competitive tennis will have to wait one more day. Williams will not be playing in either of Saturday’s Fed Cup singles matches as she makes her comeback five months after becoming a mother. Williams teams up with Lauren Davis to face Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands in Sunday’s doubles match. “It’s definitely the start of a long process,” Williams said. “Physically, I feel good. Every day, I get better and I get stronger. That’s just something I always keep telling myself every day, I have to get better.” Williams, 36, has not played an official match since winning the 2017 Australian Open. Williams later revealed she was pregnant during that tournament. Although Williams is not scheduled to play any singles matches this weekend, that could change. U.S. captain Kathy Rinaldi has the right to change her Sunday lineup after Saturday’s play. “We’ll wait and see how tomorrow goes and then we’ll make our adjustments, if any,” Rinaldi said Friday. The U.S. will have Venus Williams take on Arantxa Rus and CoCo Vandeweghe will face Richel Hogerkamp on Saturday as it opens its Fed Cup title defense. Sunday’s scheduled singles matches have Venus Williams facing Hogerkamp and Vandeweghe taking on Rus.
