7 champs help Crook County to district championship

MOLALLA — By no means was it a runaway victory, but Crook County rode seven individual champions to 412.5 points and a first-place finish at the Class 4A Special District 1 wrestling championships Saturday.

The Cowboys defeated runner-up Tillamook, which had 372 points.

The top four placers in each weight class qualify for next week’s state meet at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Crook County’s Colton Morgan, at 132 pounds, and Caleb Parrott, at 285, won titles by first-period fall. Kyle Knudtson (170), Zachary Mauras (126) and Hunter Mode (106, and over teammate Steven Ware) also recorded pins in their championship matches for the Cowboys. Other champions for Crook County included Pacer Quire at 120 and Tyler Fioravanti at 138.

Placing second for the Cowboys were Trevor Martin at 113 and Colton Burkhardt at 160. Jaxson Rhoden (182) and Mario Hanson (220) each placed third, and fourth-place finishers for Crook County included Tannon Joyner at 113, Tucker Shores at 132 and Calum Wilcox at 220.

Harrison Manu was second at 195 for Madras, which was seventh in the 11-team standings with 76 points. The White Buffaloes’ Thomas LeClaire placed third at 170.

Outlaws qualify for state: SWEET HOME — Dustin Smith, at 152 pounds, and Casey Warburton, at 285, placed fourth to help Sisters take 10th place with 86 points at the Class 4A Special District 2 championships. The top five placers in each weight class earn bids to next week’s state meet in Portland. Damien Wills won the fifth-place match at 145 to advance to state for Sisters. Defending 4A champion Sweet Home topped the 12-team standings with 386.5 points.

White Buffalo earns auto bid: MADRAS — Kyle Hartman won the boys 50-yard freestyle in 24.11 seconds at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 2 championships to automatically qualify for next week’s state meet at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. Individual and relay winners from districts earn bids to the state meet, and the remaining open lanes are filled with the fastest times from district meets throughout the state. Hartman was also second in the 100 breaststroke for Madras, which was fourth as a team with 120 points. The White Buffaloes’ Teague Schierling was third in the breaststroke and sixth in the 100 free, and Karson Hartman placed third in the 100 backstroke. For the Madras girls, who rounded out the team standings with 22 points, Gabi Smith was third in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 free. La Grande won the boys title with 378 points, and Catlin Gabel won the girls title with 329 points.

Culver 62, Weston-McEwen 49: CULVER — Avenging a loss at Weston-McEwen two weeks earlier, Culver earned a share of the Columbia Basin Conference title and will face the co-champion Tigerscots again Tuesday at a neutral site to be determined to decide the No. 1 seed in the upcoming league playoffs. Irma Retano scored 30 points for the Bulldogs (6-2 CBC, 15-8 overall), who turned a 24-22 halftime deficit into a 42-32 lead with a big third quarter. Mia Gamboa scored 12 points and Mikayla Haessler added eight for Culver. The winner of the Culver vs. Weston-McEwen tiebreaker will automatically qualify for the Class 2A state tournament; the loser will face third-place Heppner in an elimination game later in the week.

North Lake 51, Central Christian 16: SILVER LAKE — Rachel Baker scored 12 points and Jessica House added 11 as North Lake closed Mountain Valley League play with its fourth win in five games. Briana Church scored eight points and Andrea Roth had seven for the Cowgirls (7-4 MVL, 15-7 overall). Faith Lyons scored eight points to pace Central Christian (1-10, 2-18), which played North Lake to a 9-9 tie in the first quarter before being outscored 13-0 in the pivotal second period. Three of the Tigers’ five scorers in their season finale were freshmen.

Gilchrist 70, Prospect 23: GILCHRIST — The Grizzlies capped a strong finish to the season with their second straight win, roaring to a 13-0 first-quarter lead en route to the Mountain Valley League victory. Skyla Newton had 16 points, six steals and five assists to lead Gilchrist, who listed a season-high seven scorers. Also for the Grizzlies (2-9 MVL, 3-15 overall), Rylee Hoover had 13 points and nine rebounds, Rayenee Hoover had 12 points, nine steals and seven rebounds, and Madison Mefford had 14 points and seven boards.

Harrisburg 52, La Pine 23: HARRISBURG — The Hawks’ last chance to notch a Mountain Valley Conference win was snuffed out early by Harrisburg, which raced to a 13-5 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Haily Hinkle scored six points and grabbed four rebounds for La Pine (0-10 MVC, 4-20 overall) in its season finale.

Boys basketball

La Pine 52, Harrisburg 48: HARRISBURG — The Hawks turned back a late Harrisburg charge, making 6 of 7 free throws in the final three minutes to secure a Mountain Valley Conference win in their last game of the season. Giroux Gerhart scored 17 points to lead La Pine (2-8 MVC, 6-16 overall), and Peyton Manley added 10 points. Also for the winners, Wyatt Oldham had nine rebounds and four blocks, Jeremy Smith had four assists and Damien Pike made three steals.

Weston-McEwen 59, Culver 43: CULVER — The Bulldogs (0-8 CBC, 5-20 overall) ended their season with a Columbia Basin Conference loss.

Trinity Lutheran 44, Paisley 40: Matthew Eidler scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to carry Trinity Lutheran to a Mountain Valley League win in its final game of the regular season. Eidler, who tweaked his ankle earlier in the game, finished with 22 points and Fernando Herrero scored eight. Abe Clift had six points and nine rebounds. The Saints (10-3 MVL, 17-7 overall) finished third in the MVL standings and will host a conference play-in game Tuesday.

Central Christian 32, North Lake 30: SILVER LAKE — Central Christian built a 26-18 lead after three quarters, then held on for the road victory in the Mountain Valley League regular-season finale for both teams. Josh Biever scored 10 points and Luke Hannay scored eight for the Tigers (7-6 MVL, 13-9 overall), whose postseason opener is to be determined. For North Lake (4-9, 12-12), Silas Roth had 11 points and seven rebounds and Tyce Grassman scored six points and had five steals for the Cowboys, who were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss.

Gilchrist 60, Prospect 40: GILCHRIST — Ethan Hirshon poured in 27 points as Gilchrist snapped a 10-game losing streak with a season-ending Mountain Valley League victory. Beau Burr scored 17 points and Jaekob Spurlock added 12 for the Grizzlies (2-11 MVL, 2-17 overall), who outscored Prospect in all four quarters.
