Mountain View wins 1st district title, sends 14 to state

REDMOND — For the first time ever, Mountain View is a district wrestling champion.
With a program-record 14 state-qualifying wrestlers, including five first-place finishers, the Cougars racked up 400 points to win the Class 5A Special District 4 championship at Redmond High on Saturday.
The defending district champion Panthers finished second with 279.5 points, followed by Hermiston with 207 and Pendleton with 178.
Mountain View boasted eight wrestlers in the finals and another four battled through the consolation brackets to place in the top four. The top four placers qualify for next week’s state meet at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
Among the Cougars’ district champions was 152-pounder Carson Fassett, who upset top-seeded Bailey Fisher of Redmond 12-1 to win the crown.
At 285, Mountain View’s Reed Sehorn-Hurst captured the title with a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker win over Hermiston’s Beau Blake. Frankie Lesowske won 7-1 over Redmond’s Wyatt Gross at 170, and brothers Beau and Blake Ohlson took the titles at 126 and 145, respectively.
Carsen Johnson, at 120, John Cole, at 138, and Luke Schulz, at 182, all placed second for the Cougars. Evan Mclean defeated Mountain View teammate Cannon Potts for third at 132. Austin Rosales (145) and Jacob Conklin (220) both placed third, and Tyson Oliver (113) and Beau Caldwell (152) both placed fourth to give the Cougs 14 state qualifiers as the team looks to improve on its sixth-place showing at state last season, which stands as the program’s best finish.
For the Panthers, who will send 12 wrestlers to state, Kagen Lawrence took the title at 106, Diego Suganuma defeated teammate Austin Anderson at 113, and Clayton Elrod recorded a fall to win the 160-pound bracket. Jacob Curry (132), John Crivellone (195) and John Lawrence (220) fell in the finals to the top seed in their respective brackets. Redmond’s Trae Bolken and Austin Carter placed third at 138 and 160, respectively, and Kole Davis took fourth at 120.
Haakon Kjellesvik defeated top-seeded Schulz of Mountain View 8-2 to win the 182-pound championship for Bend High, which was sixth as a team with 145 points. Cyrus Tadjiki (152), Payton Davis (170) and Daniel Winters (195) all placed third for the Lava Bears, and James Anderson, at 126, and Tyson Pettigrew, at 220, both took fourth. Ridgeview was seventh with 67 points, and Summit, highlighted by Jonah Yunker’s fourth-place finish at 285, was eighth with 66 points.
