Strong pitching carries Beavers — Meehra Nelson pitched two-hit ball over five innings and Mariah Mazon earned her first career save with two innings of shutout relief, leading Oregon State to a 3-1 win over Missouri on Sunday, the final day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona. Freshman Camryn Ybarra snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning, and the Beavers held on from there. Oregon State (4-1) is on the road again this week, starting with a Thursday game at Louisiana-Lafayette before competing Friday through Sunday in the Purple and Gold Challenge at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Ducks stay hot to open season — Gwen Svekis’ second-inning grand slam was the loudest of four Oregon home runs, and the Ducks battered New Mexico 14-1 on Sunday to conclude their run at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona. The victory hiked Oregon’s record to 6-0. Pitchers Maggie Balint and Olivia Kinsey combined on a five-inning three-hitter for the Ducks, who also got a three-run homer from D.J. Sanders, a two-run blast from Jenna Lilley and a solo shot from Lauren Burke. Next up for Oregon is the three-day Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, opening with a Thursday game versus Houston.

Niners linebacker Foster arrested — Authorities say San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and possessing an assault rifle. Arrest records show that Foster was booked at the Santa Clara County, California, jail Sunday, with bail set at $75,000. The East Bay Times reports that a woman who has been in a long-term relationship with Foster told officers an assault occurred after an argument. Officers located the rifle while responding to the call. Foster, a first-round selection in the 2017 NFL draft, was expected to post bail on Sunday. The 49ers released a statement saying the organization is aware of the arrest and is collecting information.
