Darrell “Chuck” Wayne Halligan of Bend, Oregon, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on February 11, 2018. He was 90.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 11:00 am at Deschutes Memorial Gardens, located at 63875 N. Hwy 97 in Bend, Oregon.
Chuck was born January 12, 1928, in North Platte, Nebraska, one of four children to Lloyd R. and Gladys M. (Foster) Halligan. When Chuck was eight, he, along with his family moved to Bend to escape the Dust Bowl. He immediately met his friend Janet Johnson while in the second grade, who he would later marry and raise a family, with. Both he and Janet attended Kenwood Elementary School and graduated from Bend High School together. They were married August 27, 1950, in Bend.
After graduating from high school, Chuck served in the United States Navy from 1946-1948. Shortly thereafter, he attended Oregon State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science and then received a Masters degree from Stanford University. Chuck was a world-recognized structural engineer whose professional accomplishments included being the chief civil engineer for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) System in the San Francisco Bay Area, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and an Adjunct Professor at U.C. Berkeley. Chuck retired as a Senior Vice President from Bechtel in 1989.
After retiring, he and Janet returned to Bend, where he volunteered countless hours with the First United Methodist ChurchHe enjoyed woodworking and cabinet making and he, along with his wife Janet, was an active member of the United Methodist Church.
Chuck is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Janet Halligan of Bend; their two sons, David Halligan of Berkeley, California, and Kevin Halligan of Bend, Oregon; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents and his three siblings.
