GRESHAM — They have not won a thing yet. But Central Oregon swimmers made their intentions quite evident Friday night with strong showings in the preliminary round of the Class 5A state championships.

Swimmers from Bend, Mountain View and Summit high schools posted the fastest prelim times in 12 of the 22 events staged at the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center, where the 5A championships get underway at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Bend High girls were impressive in the prelims. The defending state team champions and winners of two of the past three 5A titles, the Lava Bears were led by senior Emily Brockman, who posted the fastest qualifying times in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

Brockman is the reigning state champion in both events, and her prelim time of 1 minute, 4.22 seconds is a new 5A state record and met the standard for All-America consideration.

Also for Bend, senior Hailey Hyde was first in the 200 freestyle and swam on the Bears’ first-place 200 freestyle relay.

Summit’s girls were first in three preliminary events. Sophomore Ani Husaby was fastest in the 100 butterfly, and she swam legs for the Storm’s first-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

In the 5A boys prelims, Bend’s Kurt Felder and Mountain View’s Griffin McKean set the pace for Central Oregon entries.

Felder, a senior, placed first in the IM after swimming for the Lava Bears’ first-place 200 medley relay. McKean, a junior, clocked the top time in the 200 freestyle and also in the breaststroke, in which he is the defending state champion.

Also Friday night, Bend High’s Casandra Shaffer placed second in the finals of two para-athlete events: the mixed 50- and 100-yard freestyles.

In the 4A/3A/2A/1A meet, Sisters’ Lydia Bartlett was second in the girls 500 freestyle prelims with a time of 5:08.64 that was nearly 17 seconds better than her seeded time. Bartlett finished .69 seconds behind Sweet Home’s Lauren Yon. Also in the event was the Outlaws’ Meredith Mandal, who placed seventh and will be the first alternate for Saturday’s final.

Sisters’ Hawley Harrer qualified for the 50 free championship race by placing fifth in the 50 free, and Brooke Robillard finished fifth in the breaststroke. Teamed together, Bartlett, Robillard, Mandal and Harrer recorded the meet’s top time — 1:42.64, .06 seconds faster than North Bend — in the 200 free relay. The four also teamed up to advance to the finals in the 400 free relay, thanks to a third-place finish in the prelims, and in the 200 medley relay, by taking sixth.

Madras had two entries in the boys championships: Kyle Hartman was 12th in the 50 free prelims, while the 200 medley relay team also placed 12th.

The 4A/3A/2A/1A finals are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
