BASEBALL

Another season-opening triumph for OSU — Nick Madrigal and Trevor Larnach hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning, and No. 2 Oregon State beat New Mexico 5-2 Friday in Surprise, Arizona, to notch its ninth consecutive season-opening win. Luke Heimlich was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings in his first appearance since the NCAA regionals last June. Last season’s Pac-12 pitcher of the year, Heimlich sat out the Beavers’ appearance in the 2017 College World Series after a report surfaced that he had pleaded guilty to a count of felony child molestation stemming from an incident when he was 15 years old. Brandon Eisert pitched three scoreless innings of relief Friday to earn the save. Oregon State (1-0) plays again Saturday in Surprise against Gonzaga.

Ducks start season with win — Jakob Goldfarb hit a three-run homer and finished with five RBIs, leading Oregon to a 6-1 victory over Loyola Marymount in the Ducks’ season opener Friday at the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas. A redshirt junior outfielder and catcher from Scottsdale, Arizona, Goldfarb made a splash in his return to the lineup after missing all of last season with a toe injury. Jonny DeLuca also homered for the Ducks, a solo shot in the sixth inning that snapped a 1-1 tie and was followed later in the inning by Goldfarb’s game-breaking blast. Matt Mercer was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on three hits over 6 1/3 innings. Oregon (1-0) plays Saturday night against tournament host UNLV.

SOFTBALL

Oregon takes two in Mexico tourney — Jenna Lilley drove in four runs, D.J. Sanders hit a solo home run, and No. 3 Oregon took an 8-0 run-rule victory over Texas in the Ducks’ second game Friday at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. In the first game, Sanders’ two-run homer capped a five-run first inning in Oregon’s 10-0 rout of Rutgers. Miranda Elish (3-0) struck out seven Texas batters and walked none in a three-hit shutout. Against Rutgers, Maggie Balint (3-0) spun a two-hitter and was helped by a defense that produced three double plays. The Ducks (9-0) finish their four-game run in the Puerto Vallarta tournament Saturday night against Ole Miss.

Beavs ride strong pitching to 2 wins — Meehra Nelson tossed a two-hit shutout and Mariah Mazon allowed only one run in a complete-game victory, leading Oregon State to a pair of wins Friday on the opening day of the Purple and Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. First, Nelson struck out 12 in the Beavers’ 1-0 win over Central Arkansas. Chance Burden’s sacrifice fly in the second inning produced the game’s only run. Later, Mazon struck out seven and allowed five hits in a 6-1 OSU victory over Southern Utah. Hope Brandner delivered the big hit of the game for the Beavers, a three-run homer that highlighted a four-run third inning. Oregon State (6-2) plays two games in the tournament again Saturday, facing Louisiana Tech and LSU.

BASKETBALL

St. Bonaventure upsets No. 16 Rhode Island — Matt Mobley scored 26 points and grabbed a key rebound with 4.2 seconds left, and St. Bonaventure beat Rhode Island 77-74 to snap the 16th-ranked Rams’ 16-game winning streak on Friday night. LaDarien Griffin scored 10 of the Bonnies last 14 points over the final six minutes in rallying them back from a 67-61 deficit — St. Bonaventure’s largest of the game. The Bonnies (20-6, 10-4 Atlantic 10) won their eighth straight and stayed in the hunt for the regular-season conference title. The Rams (21-3, 13-1 A-10) had not lost since dropping a 68-64 decision at Alabama on Dec. 6. Rhode Island’s winning streak was the longest in the nation.
