GRESHAM — For the first time ever, Bend High swept the boys and girls swimming state championships Saturday night.
The Lava Bears girls won their second straight Class 5A state title — and third in the last four years — while the Bend boys have now claimed two of the last three team state championships.
“That was something that we secretly always hoped for, but going into the competition on paper, it didn’t look like that,” Bend coach Tamas Bessenyei said of the boys and girls sweep. “We knew it was possible, and I think the boys and girls just came together and do what they do best — compete. It’s very special. These kids bonded together and worked together and cheered for each other throughout the season. The fact that they were able to do this together, it’s very special.”
The Bend girls won in domination fashion, racking up 101 points. Crescent Valley finished second with 65 points, Summit was third (34) and Mountain View fifth (23).
The Lava Bears won the 200-yard medley relay with swimmers Maria Wold, Emily Brockman, Ryann Reid and Ula McPherson in 1 minute, 48.83 seconds.
Brockman, a senior, also claimed a state title in the 200 individual relay (2:05.71) and finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.41).
“Emily has been one of the most successful Bend High swimmers of all time, and she has been someone who the team could always count on,” Bessenyei said. “She always gave everything she had, and she capped her career off in a really amazing manner.”
The Lava Bears also won the 200 freestyle relay with Hailey Hyde, Reid, Michaela Lorenz, and McPherson in 1:40.60.
Mountain View’s Emma Brady won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.36 and Summit’s Ani Husaby claimed the 100 butterfly championship in 56.95.
In the boys state championship meet, the Lava Bears posted 53 points. Lebanon finished second with 42 points and Corvallis was third (37). Mountain View placed sixth (24) and Summit finished tied with Silverton for eighth (18).
The Bend boys won the 200 medley relay with swimmers Gharret Brockman, Blaine Pappa, Kurt Felder and Alexander Moore.
Felder, a senior, added an individual state title in the 200 medley (1:56.94) and finished second in the 100 butterfly (50.45).
“Kurt was really good throughout the whole season, and he wanted to go out on top,” Bessenyei said. “For him, it was all about trying to get this team to the highest place. He really gave everything he had.”
Griffin McKean of Mountain View won both the 200 freestyle (1:43.76) and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.30).
In the 4A/3A/2A/1A state meet held earlier in the day at the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center, Sisters’ Lydia Bartlett was runner-up in the girls 500 freestyle, finishing behind Sweet Home’s Lauren Yon by a mere .25 seconds. Hawley Harrer took fourth in the 50 free for the Outlaws, and Brooke Robillard was fifth in the breaststroke. The three Sisters swimmers teamed up with Meredith Mandal to take second in the 200 free relay (losing to North Bend by 1.30 seconds), second in the 400 free relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay.
The Outlaws finished fourth as a team with 34 points, while North Bend claimed the state championship with 66 points.
