Beavers drop heartbreaker — No. 7 LSU made a fifth-inning sacrifice fly stand Sunday in a 1-0 victory over Oregon State as the Beavers closed out play in the Purple and Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. OSU’s Meehra Nelson pitched a complete game, allowing a run on three hits and striking out four over six innings. McKenna Arriola’s double was one of three hits for the Beavers (7-4), who are back on the diamond Thursday evening against Oklahoma State at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, California.

BASEBALL

Ducks belt 4 homers in win — Gabe Matthews and Spencer Steer hit two-run homers, and Jakob Goldfarb hit two solo shots to lead Oregon to an 8-5 win Sunday over Indiana State on the final day of the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas. Matthews was 4-for-4, and his homer highlighted a three-run seventh inning that broke a 5-5 tie. Steer’s first-inning homer was part of a 3-for-5 performance. Kelly Parker, the third of four Oregon pitchers, earned the victory with 11⁄3 innings of perfect relief. Next up for the Ducks (2-1) is a Wednesday night game at the University of Portland.

Larnach, Beavers outslug Cal Poly — Trevor Larnach continued his early-season tear Sunday, homering in his third straight game and collecting four hits and four RBIs to lead Oregon State to a 16-7 victory over Cal Poly in Surprise, Arizona. Larnach, a junior outfielder from Pleasant Hill, California, is now 8-for-9 in the Beavers’ 3-0 start. Including Larnach, eight players had two or more hits for OSU, which had 20 hits for the game. Starter Bryce Fehmel was the winning pitcher for the Beavers, allowing four runs and seven hits over 62⁄3 innings. Oregon State plays New Mexico on Monday at Surprise Stadium.
