MADRAS — Byron Patt tallied 18 points to lead four Madras scorers in double figures, and the White Buffaloes beat Crook County 74-68 Tuesday night in the Tri-Valley Conference boys basketball finale for both teams.
Madras prevailed despite Thaiden Mullan’s 35-point effort for Crook County, which trailed 61-41 after three quarters but rallied to within four points in the fourth before the Buffs sealed the win with late free throws.
The win put Madras (8-2 TVC, 12-11 overall) in sole possession of second place in the conference, half a game behind Gladstone, which closes its TVC season Wednesday night against Estacada. Gladstone (8-1 TVC) holds a tiebreaker over Madras with its sweep of the two-game season series. The Buffaloes expect to host a Class 4A play-in game on or before Saturday.
The Cowboys (7-3, 10-13) slipped to third place in the TVC standings and will play a road game in the play-in round, also on or before Saturday.
Tyler Lockey had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Madras, and Kanim Smith III and Chad Thurby added 11 points apiece.
Mullan’s outburst included 12 field goals — three of them 3-pointers — and 8-for-9 shooting from the free-throw line.
“He just lit us up,” said Madras coach Evan Brown of the Crook County junior.
Devin Bishop scored eight points and Holt Porfily had seven for the Cowboys, who lost to Madras for the second time in as many meetings this season.
